Extending the life of your hard drive

Its no secret the hard drives die. It is one of the most common failures in computers, probably only second to fans. The main reason being heat and moving parts. Most people may think this failure is eminent, and no way to prevent it. I respectfully disagree. There are two main areas that need addressed when trying to prevent hard drive failure:

Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS ISPConfig default site permissions

I built a server to host a CMS comparison between Drupal and Wordpress. I frequently use ISPConfig to create all of my sites and it works absolutely perfect. In this case, however, I am on a domain, limited to an internal static IP. Additionally, our in house server admin doesn't like Linux (hasn't used it) so I can't ask him to create a DNS reverse lookup entry for the hostname on the DNS server.

Virtualization - vmware and Ubuntu Server

I recently undertook the task of building a LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) server for hosting a wordpress site and a drupal site for comparison of the two CMSs . I have done this countless times and most are still running smoothely to this day. However, this time it was a little different... If our department decided one of these CMSs is a good fit for our public website, we would need a production LAMP server. And although I have built LAMP servers multiple times, I'd rather not have to build one so quickly right after the other.
